A Historic Milestone: The First AGM Since Establishment in 2023

The Zoo Keepers Association Uganda (ZKAU) successfully held its 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 10th January 2026 at Kavumba Wildlife Education Center, marking a historic and defining moment in the Association’s journey. This AGM was significant as it was the first-ever Annual General Meeting since ZKAU’s establishment in 2023, setting a strong foundation for governance, accountability, and collective progress.

The meeting brought together zoo keepers, conservation practitioners and stakeholders committed to advancing animal welfare, professional zoo keeping, and conservation education in Uganda.

Purpose.

The AGM was convened to:

  • Review the Association’s progress since its establishment in 2023.
  • Present and adopt reports on activities, achievements, and challenges.
  • Strengthen member engagement and participation.
  • Discuss strategic priorities and future plans.
  • Promote unity and professionalism among zoo keepers in Uganda.

This first AGM symbolized ZKAU’s transition from formation to structured institutional growth.

Key Highlights of the AGM

Official Opening and Welcome Remarks
The meeting opened with welcome remarks from the ZKAU leadership, acknowledging members for their commitment and resilience during the formative years of the Association. Emphasis was placed on unity, professionalism, and shared responsibility in shaping the future of zoo keeping in Uganda.

Review of ZKAU’s Journey (2023–2024)
Members were taken through a comprehensive overview of ZKAU’s journey since its establishment in 2023. Key milestones included:

  • Formation of the Association and leadership structures.
  • Growth in membership.
  • Engagement in wildlife conservation and education activities.
  • Advocacy for animal welfare and keeper professionalism.
  • Initiation of welfare-driven programs, including support schooling for children affected by wildlife in communities, keepers welfare and development.

Presentation of Reports
Reports covering activities, projects, financial accountability, and challenges were presented and discussed. Members actively engaged in discussions, asked questions, and provided constructive feedback, reflecting a strong culture of transparency and accountability.

Member Engagement and Discussions
The AGM provided an open platform for members to share experiences, challenges faced in the field, and suggestions for strengthening the Association. Discussions focused on:

  • Capacity building and training for zoo keepers.
  • Improved animal welfare standards.
  • Conservation education and public awareness.
  • Strengthening partnerships with conservation institutions.

Way Forward and Strategic Direction
The leadership outlined strategic priorities for the coming years, including:

A Milestone for Zoo Keeping in Uganda

Holding the first AGM since establishment represents a major step forward for ZKAU. More importantly, it reinforced the role of zoo keepers as frontline conservation ambassadors and custodians of animal welfare.
